OVERVIEW

Join us at the annual "Addiction Studies Institute," which is hosted by Talbot Hall of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and takes place from July 31 to August 2, 2013. Christina M. Delos Reyes, MD, of our Center will present two workshops. Sign up for her sessions and visit our display table.


1.) Life after DSM-5: New Classification for Substance Use and Addictive Disorders

Date: Thursday, August, 1, 2013

Presenter: Christina M. Delos Reyes, MD, medical consultant at the Center for Evidence-Based Practices at Case Western Reserve University (for bio, see "keynote speaker" section below).

Abstract: We will review and explain the major changes to the classification of Substance Use and Addictive Disorders that are scheduled to occur with the publication of the DSM-5 in May of 2013. Participants will discuss the impact of these changes on the identification and treatment of substance-related disorders and behavioral addictions. The new DSM-5 classification will also be compared and contrasted with the ASAM definition of addiction and emerging definitions and concepts about recovery.

Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to:

  1. Compare and contrast the DSM-IV and DSM-5 classification of substance use disorders and behavioral addictions.
  2. Discuss the impact of the DSM-5 classification on the identification and treatment of substance use disorders and behavioral addictions.
  3. Review how the DSM-5 classification aligns with prevailing ideas about addiction and recovery.

2.) Medications in the Treatment of Addiction and Mental Illnesss

Date: Thursday, August, 1, 2013

Presenter: Christina M. Delos Reyes, MD, medical consultant at the Center for Evidence-Based Practices at Case Western Reserve University (for bio, see "keynote speaker" section below).

Abstract: This session is intended to provide an overview of currently used medications to treat substance use disorders and mental illnesses. Participants will learn how the medications work, what side effects to expect, and what interactions the medications may have with other treatments and with drugs of abuse. There will also be a focus on how to monitor and encourage compliance with medications.

Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to:

  1. List commonly used and newly-approved medications for the treatment of addiction and mental illnesses.
  2. Discuss common interactions between psychiatric medications and substances of abuse.
  3. Identify strategies to increase medication non-adherence and to decrease substance use in patients with dual disorders.

The "Addiction Studies Institute" draws over 850 professionals together each year from Ohio and other states for education and workforce development in alcohol-and-other-drug prevention, treatment, and recovery-support services.  This event is considered the largest Midwest conference of its kind. In addition to general sessions, participants can select from numerous concurrent sessions. These sessions range from entry-level to advanced in scope.

Christina M. Delos Reyes, MD, is medical consultant at the Center for Evidence-Based Practices (CEBP) at Case Western Reserve University and its two Ohio Coordinating Center of Excellence (CCOE) initiatives—the Substance Abuse and Mental Illness (SAMI) CCOE and Supported Employment (SE) CCOE. In this capacity, she provides technical assistance to service systems and organizations that are implementing evidence-based practices and other best practices for people with mental illness and co-occurring mental illness and substance use disorders.

Dr. Delos Reyes is board certified in both adult psychiatry and addiction psychiatry and is a diplomate of the American Board of Addiction Medicine. Her training has included psychopharmacology both for mental illness and substance use disorders, individual therapy, group therapy, psychoeducation, and working with interdisciplinary teams. She is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), an international association of trainers in motivational interviewing.
