This audio CD provides an introduction to the spirit of Motivational Interviewing (MI), the evidence-based treatment, with an emphasis upon substance-use disorders. MI is a conversational approach designed to help people discover their own interest in considering and/or making a change in their lives (e.g., diet, exercise, reducing and eliminating the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs). MI helps people acknowledge and make use of their own change-talk as a source of motivation.
This CD features staff members of the Center for Evidence-Based Practices (CEBP) at Case Western Reserve University telling stories about MI from their experiences as direct-service providers, consultants, and trainers. They hope that, no matter where you are in your professional journey, you might hear something that will encourage you to take that next important step toward improving your practice.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) was developed and is studied by William R. Miller, Ph.D., and Stephen Rollnick, Ph.D. According to Miller and Rollnick, "MI is a collaborative, person-centered form of guiding to elicit and strengthen motivation for change" (Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) 2009). More information about MI is available on this website.
