Training Series for Housing Staff Focuses on Employment, Creating a Culture of Change

Increase housing stability and employment among people with mental illness, substance use disorders, and co-occurring disorders. Our Center continues to present a series of important one-day training events in cities throughout Ohio (see list below) for staff and supervisors of housing services, including the following:

  • PSH/Permanent Supportive & Independent Housing
  • Transitional Housing
  • Residential
  • Adult Care Facilities
  • Emergency Shelters
  • YMCA & YWCA Housing
  • Community CPST
  • Recovery Houses

Other providers of mental-health and addiction treatment are welcomed to attend.These events are made possible with support from the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) as part of its statewide initiative to promote housing stability among residents.

Why a culture of change?

Stable housing gives people a foundation to succeed in recovery. There are many issues that might challenge someone's housing stability (e.g., symptoms, interpersonal conflicts, hoarding, not following rules). The way you respond to and interact with residents can positively influence their future success. Learn to do the following:

  • Build self-awareness about your attitudes, thoughts, and communication style as you conduct your work
  • Keep your attention centered on residents
  • Encourage each resident's motivation to change

Why jobs & employment? 

Employment promotes recovery by providing people with extra income and a valued social role. People who work tend to achieve independent housing and a higher quality of life.

  • Identify strategies to assist residents with identifying jobs that are a good fit for them
  • Identify employer incentives and other strategies to encourage hiring
  • Identify strategies for engaging employers in conversations about their hiring interests and preferences
