SKILL BUILDING

Stages of Behavior Change, Employment Promote Housing Stability

—by Paul M. Kubek

Increase housing stability and employment among people with mental illness, substance use disorders, and co-occurring disorders. Our Center is hosting a series of important one-day training events on multiple dates at multiple locations throughout Ohio from February to June 2014. The events are designed primarily for staff and supervisors of housing services, including the following:

  • PSH/Permanent Supportive & Independent Housing
  • Transitional Housing
  • Residential
  • Adult Care Facilities
  • Emergency Shelters
  • YMCA & YWCA Housing
  • Community CPST

Other providers of mental-health and addiction treatment are welcomed to attend. These events are made possible with support from the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) as part of its statewide initiative to promote housing stability among residents.

STAGES OF BEHAVIOR CHANGE

Here's a sample of what you will learn:

  • How the use of alcohol and other drugs and their short-term and long-term effects influence cognition, emotional regulation, and behavior of residents, especially those with severe mental illness (SMI)
  • Stag-wise approaches for supporting behavior change among people with SMI and addiction (because changes often occur incrementally in stages over time)
  • Things to say that encourage and support a person's desire to change
  • Things not to say because it makes people defensive and not willing to change
  • Core competencies (knowledge and skills) from evidence-based practices to improve your effectiveness in delivering services to this population

EMPLOYMENT

Here's a sample of what you'll learn:

  • How to help people discover their desire and motivation to begin a job search and make employment an important part of their journey
  • How to help residents engage in employment services
  • How to use the spirit and core components of Supported Employment Individual Placement and Support (SE/IPS), the evidence-based practice
  • Methods for helping people with co-occurring substance use problems pursue their employment goals
