Abstract

Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) is a widely researched service delivery model for individuals with mental illness (and co-occurring substance abuse) who experience consistent, severe symptoms and who benefit from regular, intensive treatment from a multidisciplinary team of trained mental health professionals.

Group counseling is a form of psychosocial treatment that involves meeting with a group of individuals whom all face similar concerns.  The purpose is to help individuals better understand themselves in the context of relationship so that they can make more informed, healthy, and adaptive choices based on a deeper awareness of their feelings, interpersonal behaviors, reactions and patterns. Group therapy is considered an effective adjunct to traditional individual therapy as well as ACT services. This session offers a basic introduction to the developmental stages of groups and the facilitation skills, roles and functions.

Participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the six functions of a group facilitator.
  • Identify characteristic of an effective group leader.
