PowerPoints from this event have been posted as a PDF in the "Supporting Materials" section below.
Employment promotes recovery for persons with mental illness and substance use disorders by providing extra income and a valued social role. Studies have examined non-vocational outcomes in relation to steady employment among people with mental illness and co-occurring substance use disorders. People who work tend to achieve independent housing and a higher quality of life, especially in the first five years. People with co-occurring disorders can improve markedly.
This one-day workshop will identify components of employment
services and best practices that will help foster a culture of work
across an array of housing settings. Organizational facilitators and
barriers will be explored in small and large group exercises. Participants will finish the day by developing a work plan to develop and/or enhance a culture of work in their particular organizations. Examples of housing settings include the following:
- PSH/Permanent Supportive & Independent Housing
- Transitional Housing
- Residential
- Adult Care Facilities
- Emergency Shelters
- YMCA & YWCA Housing
- Community CPST
- Recovery Houses
