Abstract 

Supervising and leading intensive-treatment teams in the changing behavioral health landscape can prove challenging. Intentional leadership and supervision are critical elements in creating resiliency on intensive treatment teams. The resilience of a team is based upon the following:

  • A planful process for building healthy cohesive team environments
  • Supervising team members around the necessary knowledge and skills needed to provide recovery-oriented service delivery
  • Effective transition-management strategies
  • Ongoing professional growth through competency-based evaluation and succession planning.

This workshop will explore the qualities necessary of and the considerations that supervisors and leaders make concerning clinical/administrative supervision and leadership essentials involved in sustaining an intensive treatment team. The event will include interactive activities that promote the application of training content into practice. This event will explore the following:

  • Components of Cohesive Teams:
  • Resiliency-Focused Model of Supervision
  • Recovery-Oriented Supervision
  • Foundations of Transition Management
  • Staff Professional Development
    • Competency-Based Evaluations
    • Succession Planning

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify critical components necessary for building cohesive teams
  • List core considerations of Resiliency-Focused Supervision and Recovery-Oriented Supervision
  • Utilize vignettes ad group discussion to identify an apply principles of Transition Management
  • Describe the role of succession planning and competency based evaluation in staff professional development

This training event is part of a series of ongoing workshops developed and presented by the Center for Evidence Based Practices at Case Western Reserve University to help develop and enhance administrative and clinical leadership and supervision among behavioral healthcare professionals and organizations.

Deana Leber-George, MEd, LPCC-S, is a consultant and trainer at the Center for Evidence-Based Practices (CEBP) at Case Western Reserve University and its Ohio Substance Abuse and Mental Illness Coordinating Center of Excellence (Ohio SAMI CCOE) initiative. She provides technical assistance (program consultation, clinical consultation, and training) to service systems and organizations that are implementing evidence-based practices, emerging best practices, and other strategies that improve quality of life and other outcomes for people diagnosed with severe mental illness and substance use disorders.
