OVERVIEW

This is Day 1 of a three-day regional training series about Supported Employment/Individual Placement and Support (SE/IPS), the evidence-based practice. Day 1 provides a comprehensive education for agency staff members who are involved with implementing SE/IPS. Day 1 focuses on an introduction to the SE/IPS model and benefits advocacy. Training consists of three content areas aimed at introducing participants to the spirit and structure of SE/IPS and basic benefits advocacy. The content consists of the following:

  • Overview of the SE/IPS principles. This component will provide participants with an overview of the 8 basic principles of evidence-based Supported Employment, also known as Individual Placement and Support (IPS). These core principles highlight the spirit of the SE/IPS model. Participants will be encouraged to look at the level of implementation of each principle within their agencies and at ways  these principles can be further implemented as they provide vocational services. 
  • Overview of the SE/IPS Fidelity Tool. This section will provide an overview of the SE/IPS fidelity tool as well as the fidelity-review and action-planning process. Each of the 25 items on the fidelity tool will be reviewed and key components will be identified and discussed. Focus of this section will be to help participants develop a clearer understanding of the spirit of each item on the fidelity tool.
  • Introduction to Benefits Advocacy. This section will identify both the basic impact of earnings from employment on SSI, SSDI, and medical benefits and activities that all staff members can engage in to provide practical, every day supports for individuals who receive benefits. We will review supports that can be provided before, during, and after the job-finding process. Benefits advocacy does not require extensive knowledge of mathematics or the benefits system.

Learning Objectives 

At the end of the program, participants will be able to:

  1. List the 8 basic principles of SE/IPS (Supported Employment) and evidence that supports the use of the SE/IPS model.
  2. Identify areas for change in personal, professional, or agency practices to more closely align with SE/IPS (Supported Employment).
  3. Describe the purpose, elements, and use of the SE/IPS fidelity evaluation process.
  4. Describe the basic impact, if any, of earnings from employment on SSI, SSDI, and Medical benefits.
  5. List three activities advocates can engage in to assist individuals with benefits who are working or considering work.

Deborah Myers, MEd, LPCC-SC, is a consultant and trainer at the Center for Evidence-Based Practices (CEBP) at Case Western Reserve University and its Ohio Substance Abuse and Mental Illness Coordinating Center of Excellence (Ohio SAMI CCOE) initiative. In this capacity, she provides programmatic consultation as well as clinical consultation and training to service organizations implementing Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment (IDDT), the evidence-based practice. Ms. Myers is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), an international association of trainers in motivational interviewing.

Michael Rogers is a consultant and trainer at the Center for Evidence-Based Practices at Case Western Reserve University and its Ohio Supported Employment Coordinating Center of Excellence (Ohio SE CCOE) initiative. He provides technical assistance (consultation and training) to service organizations that are implementing Supported Employment/Individual Support Services (SE/IPS), the evidence-based practice for people diagnosed with severe mental illness, substance use disorders, and co-occurring disorders.

Nicole Clevenger, MSSA, is a consultant and trainer at the Center for Evidence-Based Practices at Case Western Reserve University and its Ohio Supported Employment Coordinating Center of Excellence (Ohio SE CCOE) initiative. In this role, she provides technical assistance to service organizations throughout Ohio that are implementing Supported Employment (SE), the evidence-based practice, which helps people with mental illness find a job of their choice in the community. Ms. Clevenger also promotes the Center's consultation and training for Benefits Advocacy & Planning among service organizations and consumer-operated services (COS) that are helping people make more informed decisions about their benefits situations and employment dreams.

Steve Shober, BS, LSW, is a consultant and trainer at the Center for Evidence-Based Practices (CEBP) at Case Western Reserve University and its Ohio Supported Employment Coordinating Center of Excellence (Ohio SE CCOE) initiative. He provides technical assistance (program consultation, clinical consultation, and training) to service systems and organizations that are implementing evidence-based practices, emerging best practices, and other strategies that improve quality of life and other outcomes for people diagnosed with severe mental illness and substance use disorders. The practices and strategies include the following: Supported Employment / Individual Support Services (SE / IPS), the evidence-based practice; and Benefits Planning.
