Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, person-centered form of guiding to elicit and strengthen motivation for change. It is a way of working with people (consumers, clients, patients) to assist them in accessing their intrinsic motivation to change behaviors that contradict their essential values and interfere with the achievement of their life goals. Motivational Interviewing is both a philosophy and a set of strategic techniques. It is an evidence-based treatment with a broad range of applications.

This Event | Peer Supporters & Recovery Coaches

The "Spirit of Motivational Interviewing for Peer Supporters & Recovery Coaches" introduces participants to the philosophical roots and essential constructs of the model. Participants will engage in skill-building exercises designed to assist them in utilizing client-centered approaches and strategies to enhance motivation for change.

  • Define and apply the "Spirit" of MI to one's role and function
  • Describe OARS (Person-Centered) Skills
  • This workshop will address how MI principles are applied in the various roles and functions of people providing peer support.

Nicole Clevenger, MSSA, is a consultant and trainer at the Center for Evidence-Based Practices at Case Western Reserve University and its Ohio Supported Employment Coordinating Center of Excellence (Ohio SE CCOE) initiative. In this role, she provides technical assistance to service organizations throughout Ohio that are implementing Supported Employment (SE), the evidence-based practice, which helps people with mental illness find a job of their choice in the community. Ms. Clevenger also promotes the Center's consultation and training for Benefits Advocacy & Planning among service organizations and consumer-operated services (COS) that are helping people make more informed decisions about their benefits situations and employment dreams.

Patrick E. Boyle, PhD, LISW-S, LICDC-CS, is director of implementation services at the Center for Evidence-Based Practices at Case Western Reserve University, where he oversees the technical-assistance services of all Center projects, including two Ohio Coordinating Center of Excellence (CCOE) initiatives. The technical assistance includes program consultation, clinical consultation, and training for service systems and organizations that are implementing evidence-based practices, emerging best practices, and other strategies that improve quality of life and other outcomes for people diagnosed with severe mental illness and substance use disorders.
