Abstract

One common barrier to going to work is the fear of the impact that working and earning income will have on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits.  This webinar will provide participants a brief overview of the differences between SSI and SSDI and will review the basic employment supports that are available to individuals who receive these benefits and go to work. Participants will learn more about these two key cash benefits and how they are (or are not) impacted when individuals begin to earn income.  The basic SSI benefit calculation formula and basic SSDI employment supports such as the trial work period and extended period of eligibility will be reviewed and discussed.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the basic differences between SSI and SSDI.
  • Identify the basic employment calculation for individuals who receive SSI.
  • Identify key employment supports such as trial work and the extended period of eligibility that are available to individuals who receive SSDI benefits and go to work.
