Abstract

Individuals with experiences of trauma are found in multiple service sectors, not just in behavioral healthcare settings. Trauma is widespread, harmful, and a costly public health problem. Trauma has no boundaries with regard to age, gender, socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, geography, or sexual orientation. It is an almost universal experience of people with mental disorders and substance use disorders. The need to address trauma is increasingly viewed as an important component of effective behavioral health service delivery.

Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) is becoming the expectation in all Ohio service settings. Trauma occurs as a result of violence, abuse, neglect, loss, disaster, war, and other emotionally harmful experiences. A multi-pronged, multi-agency public health approach inclusive of public education and awareness, prevention and early identification, and effective trauma-specific assessment and treatment is underway in Ohio.

This workshop will provide a general and basic foundation of TIC principles and conceptual approaches, a brief self-evaluation of professional competencies and needs, as well as an update of Ohio TIC activities.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to ...

  • List the 6 core TIC principles.
  • Identify the 3 E's and describe their relevance to clinical practice.
  • Identify the 4 R's and describe their relevance to clinical practice.
  • Identify issues for professional development.
  • Describe Ohio's TIC initiative.
