Addiction Psychiatrist Justin Trevino Integrates Treatment for Mental Illness, Substance Abuse

Trevino, MD, is assistant chief clinical officer at Twin Valley Behavioral Healthcare, a regional psychiatric hospital in Columbus, Ohio, operated by the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS). He is board certified in psychiatry and addiction psychiatry and integrates treatment for both substance abuse and mental illness (SAMI) as a way to maximize recovery for people struggling with these co-occurring disorders.

 

Training Clinical Leaders for Integrated Treatment

Justin J. Trevino, MD, of OhioMHAS teams up again with Mark Hurst, MD, medical director of OhioMHAS, and Christina M. Delos Reyes, MD, of our Center in September 2013 and Spring 2014 to present "Medical Professionals Training: Universal Considerations in the Treatment of Co-Occurring Disorders," a video-conference series for psychiatrists, nurses, and other health professionals (click here).

Dr. Trevino is known for promoting and supporting the implementation of Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment (IDDT), the evidence-based practice, in Ohio’s mental health system. Recognized as an early innovator and advocate, he received the "2007 IDDT Champion Award" at the Conference of the Ohio Substance Abuse and Mental Illness Coordinating Center of Excellence, an initiative of the Center for Evidence-Based Practices at Case Western Reserve University.

Prior to his current role at Twin Valley, Dr. Trevino served as director of addiction services for Lindner Center of HOPE in Cincinnati and as medical director at five organizations in and around Dayton, Ohio. A dedicated educator, Dr. Trevino has taught at the schools of medicine of Wright State University and Ohio State University. He has also published numerous articles on psychiatry, addiction treatment, and psychopharmacology and has made numerous presentations on these topics locally, regionally, and nationally.

A Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, Dr. Trevino was included in Academic Keys “Who’s Who in Medical Sciences Education” in 2005. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry in 1983 from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas and a Doctor of Medicine in 1987 from Wright State University School of Medicine in Dayton, Ohio.
